Attorney Jason M. Sullivan Quoted in The Telegraph on Trump’s $10 Billion BBC Lawsuit

We are pleased to share that Attorney Jason M. Sullivan of the Law Office of Jason M. Sullivan, PLLC was recently quoted in The Telegraph, one of the United Kingdom’s leading national newspapers. The article covered President Donald Trump’s defamation lawsuit against the BBC and a federal judge’s warning that the President could face sanctions for failing to cooperate with discovery in the case he brought.
Background on the Case
President Trump filed suit in federal court in Miami in December 2025, seeking $10 billion over a BBC Panorama documentary that spliced together portions of his January 6, 2021 speech. The BBC apologized for the edit, which led to the resignations of its director-general and its head of news, but denies that it defamed the President.
During discovery, the BBC’s lawyers filed five separate motions seeking the President’s compliance, including a request to compel his deposition. On October 16, 2026, U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjolique A. Lett noted that the court had already admonished the President for his lack of participation and warned that failure to strictly comply would lead to sanctions. The court has also allowed the BBC to serve legal papers on Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
Attorney Sullivan’s Comments
Asked about the possible consequences, Attorney Sullivan told The Telegraph that sanctions available in civil litigation can include an award of attorney’s fees and costs, and “even the dismissal of the plaintiff’s lawsuit.” In other words, a party who files a case and then fails to meet the court’s procedural requirements can put the very claim he brought at risk.
What This Means for Immigration Clients
Although this case falls outside immigration law, the same principle applies to every case our office handles. Whether a matter is before a federal judge or a USCIS officer, deadlines and procedural obligations are not optional. A late or incomplete answer to a Request for Evidence or a Notice of Intent to Deny can end an otherwise strong case just as surely as disregarding a court order. That is why we prepare every filing with the expectation that it will be closely examined.
