Trump Gold Card: Still an Option?

Should You Consider the Gold Card?

The program was designed for wealthy foreigners who desire a convenient way to become lawful permanent residents. Essentially, applicants will need to pay a Department of Homeland Security processing fee and make a $1 million contribution to the government. If you are a corporation, then you need to make a $2 million contribution in most cases for each sponsored worker. Applicants must also meet other requirements.

As of April 2026, only one person had been approved for a Gold Card, according to media reports. That is somewhat surprising, given that interest is reportedly robust. The media reports that hundreds of people have applied, so there is strong interest.

The Gold Card is a good option if you are wealthy and can spend the $1 million to obtain a green card. Other categories, such as the E-5 investor program, require that applicants make qualifying investment in a business and usually create at least 10 jobs. There is no job creation requirement for the Gold Card.

Why Are People Hesitant to Apply?

Some people have expressed hesitancy about applying for the Gold Card. One reason is that the program might be vulnerable to legal challenge. The Trump Administration didn’t have Congress pass a law to create the Gold Card program. Instead, the Administration interpreted current law so that a gift to the government qualifies under the EB-1 program.

Many of Trump’s changes to immigration law have been challenged in courts, with the programs left in limbo as judges review evidence and hear legal arguments. There are no current challenges to the Gold Card program, but some potential applicants fear a challenge might be on the horizon.
